We’re delighted to be welcoming the esteemed winemaker Alfredo Arribas to El Gato Negro on Monday April 9th. In a rare UK appearance, he’ll be joining us for an evening showcasing some his best wines, paired with a five course meal created especially by chef patron Simon Shaw. Whether you’re already a connoisseur of his wines or a just a lover of exquisite food and drink, this promises to be an evening to remember.
One of Catalonia’s modern wine superstars, Alfredo Arribas was a renowned architect before shifting his focus to winemaking over fifteen years ago. He’s known for making some of the most elegant and exciting wines in Priorat and Montsant in a state of the art winery, and these regularly score highly with the wine press and amongst peers.
- he’s renowned for creating wines that are massive in terms of flavour and complexity, but diminutive in terms of alcohol levels and extraction… the opposite of the over-ripe, over-wooded Priorats of old.
- his estate is comprised of around 150 acres in Priorat and 50 acres in southern Montsant; many of these vines are over 90 years old and on original rootstock
- farming is organic/biodynamic; élevage is similarly natural, with native yeast, short macerations, minimal SO2, and a “less is more” ethos
We’ve stocked many of his wines for the last six years, and they’ve been consistent customer favourites. As Simon says
I’m a massive fan of Spanish wines and these are some of the best. I’ve wanted to get an event with Alfredo Arribas in the diary for some time, I’m really looking forward to it. The first I tried was the Gotes del Priorat and I instantly knew I could pair the flavours perfectly with some of my creations. His Somni and Negre de Negres are two of my all-time favourite wines, and work so well with my style of cooking.
Tickets for the event are £65 per person, including canapés, five dishes and matching wines. The full menu is below. After the event diners will have the opportunity to purchase products and are welcome to stay in our Black Cat bar for the remainder of the evening.
